Cancer Council’s ‘Improve your long game’ campaign launches this January 2018 to increase awareness of the importance of sun protection on and off the golf course.
As The Coast is a proud supporter of the campaign you will see some education posters and several sun screen stations around the Club in the next few weeks, please feel free to use them.
Another helpful tool is a free SunSmart app that tells you when sun protection is recommended for your location using forecast information from the Bureau of Meteorology website and live UV data from ARPANSA. Click here to download app on you mobile device.
Sun protection, much like your golfing technique, needs attention out on the course.
As devoted golfers, we often spend hours out on the course in an environment that is highly reflective of ultraviolet radiation (water, sand and grass) and with minimal shade available. This increases the risk of developing sunburn, skin damage, melanoma and other skin cancers, no matter your age.
That’s why we’ve joined forces with Cancer Council NSW this summer to help our players reduce their risk of skin cancer and improve their long game. Keep an eye out for our free sunscreen next time you hit our course.
To be on par with sun protection, next time you play:
- Slop on SPF30+ or higher broad-spectrum water-resistant sunscreen.
- Slap on a broad-brim or bucket style hat to protect your face, neck and ears.
- Slip on a long sleeved shirt and pants or wear sun protective sleeves.
- Slide on sunglasses to cut down the glare. Look for a wraparound style for maximum protection.
- Seek shade while you walk and wait for play.

Improve your long game with surprising truths about melanoma
Did you know that NSW men over the age of 40 are twice as likely as women of a similar age to die of melanoma?
It’s never too late to reduce your risk of melanoma and improve your long game. Whatever your age and whatever the weather, drive home sun protection to improve your long game.
Men over 40 are twice as likely as women to die of melanoma.
Reduce your risk of melanoma and other skin cancers with a few simple tweaks to your routine. Add these into your golf day and you’ll be on your way to improving your long game and reducing your melanoma risk:
At Home
- Check the daily UV level for your local area online or in the newspaper
- A UV level of 3 and above means you need full sun protection so make sure you SLIP on a long sleeved shirt, SLOP on SPF 30+ or higher broad spectrum and water resistant sunscreen, and pack your broad brim hat and sunglasses in your bag to take with you.
Before Tee-off
- SLAP on your broad-brimmed hat and SLIDE on your sunglasses.
- If you missed applying sunscreen at home, SLOP on dry touch/active sunscreen for a non-greasy grip.
- Take a sunscreen tube with you so you can re-apply out on the course.
During play
- Sunscreen rubs and sweats off so re-apply after 2 hours to stay protected by taking advantage of the free sunscreen out on the course.
- Where possible, SEEK shade and stand in it as you wait for play.
Adopting a sun protection routine reduces your skin cancer risk, no matter your age, so keep these simple steps in mind every time you play.
