Quarter Final (Gibson Team vs Bexley GC at Anthill Park Golf Club)

The Coast Gibson Shield team ventured to Anthill Park to play Bexley in the quarter final. Our team remained unchanged from last week with Geoff Warleigh and Joe Bakalich playing 1’s, Mark Green and Duncan James playing 2’s and Brian O’Toole and Glenn F Grainger playing 3’s.
The conditions were perfect for golf with sun and a light breeze around as the first group hit off. Early results saw the teams go hole to hole trying to establish superiority, after 5 holes the 3’s were 2 down, the 2’s were 1 down and the 1’s were 1 up. As the teams came to half way the 3’s found themselves up an against a strong combination as they were 4 down at the turn, the 2’s were 1 down and the 1’s were one up.
After 12 the 3’s were 5 down and they were extremely unlucky with some bounces of the ball going the way of Bexley. The 2’s were 3 down with a young gun from Bexley seemingly being able to get all the luck which set up some hole winning shots.
The 3’s were defeated 6/5, the 2’s lost 4/3 and as the result was 2/1 to Bexley the last match was called off.
Even though we did not advance to the semi finals our team were extremely disappointed in not delivering the result they were hoping to achieve for the club.
I would like to thank the 8 members who gave up their Sundays to represent the club, they were a great team that backed each other and supported each other when they needed to.
I would like to thank Bruce Jennings who came out to every game to support us and also Maurie Rivett who came out to support us even when we were playing away.
The team would like to thank Anthony Ragusa and the rep committee for our team uniforms, and for everything else they did for us.

Elimination Final (Gibson Team vs Campbelltown GC at Springwood Golf Club)
With the Warren Team finishing in 2nd overall and heading straight into the Quarter Final, it was only the Gibson team that had to play an Elimination Final.

After finishing the season on top of our division we were hoping to be seeded high up. Unfortunately, we qualified 8th so had to play an Elimination Final to qualify through to the Quarter Final.
We traveled to Springwood on Sunday 04/09, which also happened to be Father’s Day to play Campbelltown.
We had a late change with the team being 1’s were Geoff Warleigh and Joe Backalich, the 2’s were Mark Green and Duncan James with the 3’s being Brian O’Toole and Glenn F Grainger.
The 3’s led the team off and after falling behind early fought back to Dormie 4, but Campbelltown would not quit and fought hard but our team won 2/1. The 2’s, who have not lost a match took on a very good combination from Campbelltown. The match never went more than 2 up either way and on the 18th tee they were all square. Three great tee shots set up a very close finish, Campbelltown had a mush it and the Coast Dynamic dads swooped to win the hole and win 1 up giving us an overall win. The 1’s played strong but due to some excellent golf played by both teams found themselves 2 down at the turn but they have done so many times this year they fought back to go to 2 up until a late fight back by Campbelltown they lost 1 down.

The Coast came into this round already secure in knowing that we had made it through to the The preliminary finals, at worst. What we wanted though, was to make it straight through to the Quarter Finals which would avoid us from having to play on Father’s Day. Playing Bondi golf course is tricky at best, and local knowledge is paramount I’d like to thank my brother Paul (The Opposition Manager) for his insight into the course.
We mixed the team up this week and played Mark and Glen in the number one position, as they were undefeated to this point in the season and thought they may have success where others haven’t, and they did the job, getting up 2&1. This, I think was a great result, considering they had a pest in the group with them. Doug and Tony Lloyd were defeated 5&4 by two players who I must say were outstanding. Adam and CNF secured a convincing win in the number three position winning 6&5.
The 2&1 victory over Bondi means that we went through the group stage of the season undefeated and we are seeded Number two into the finals which means we don’t have to play Father’s Day.

Sunday dawned a beautiful sunny day with a light breeze out of the west for the last game of the regular home/away format. We were lucky enough to be playing at 8:00am.
There were a few changes to the team for this game, but we were all confident of getting the required result. The first team out (3’s) were Mark Green and Duncan James, who have been undefeated all year. They were up against the Captain from Bondi and the were some great golf played by both teams, our team got out to a 3-hole lead before Bondi came back in the middle. Duncan and Mark dug deep and eventually went onto win 4/3.
The next team was Bruce Dominish and Glenn F Grainger, up against Ed & Edgar from Bondi. This game was a seesaw battle with both teams sinking some great putts before coming all square on the 18th tee. Glenn played a great shot to be on the edge of the green for 1, with Edgar just off for 1. Glenn three putted and unfortunately for Bondi Edgar four putted giving the Coast a 1 up victory.
The I’s combination of Geoff Warleigh and Joe Bakalich came up against the cunning Gerry Hannify and the young gun from Bondi Rob Aoukar. Bondi started off strongly with a birdie on the first from Rob Aoukar before jumping out to a four-hole lead. Geoff and Joe were not to be outdone and fought back to be all square on the 18th tee. Rob Aoukar finished off the way he started by sinking a birdie putt and Geoff’s birdie put just ran past the hole. A great effort by our team but just losing 1 down.
We would like to thank all the supporters who came to the game including Bruce Jennings, David Quigg, Peter Brown, and Maurie Rivett (I might have missed someone sorry). The team really appreciates the support for all parties and would like to thank the Rep Committee for the team uniform, every time we turn up we are the envy of the opposition players and supporters.
A great home and away season from the guys means we qualify for the qualifying final. This means we travel to Springwood Golf Club on Fathers Day to play against Campbelltown GC.

The Coast turned on a beautiful sunny day, with a light breeze for our game against Bondi.
This week due to some inside knowledge from Bruce Dominish and Paul “Gums” McFadyen the pairings were mixed up, as we needed to win this game to help in our march to the finals.
This week the 3’s were Geoff Warleigh and Brian O’Toole who combined well to win their match 6/5, our 2’s of Mark Green and Duncan James had a battle on their hands mid game before running out winners 4/3. The 1’s of Warren Hogan and Joe Bakalich were up against Gerry Hannify from Bondi, who has been playing Warren/Gibson since before some of our players were born. The game was a one of two nines, with Warren Hogan keeping the Coast in the game early before Joe went on the attack to secure a 6/5 win.
This week is our last regular season game and again it is a must win to ensure we make the finals, it is an early start at Bondi (07:30) so anyone who would like to come a support they would be most welcolme.
Round Four (Away vs Kareela GC)

Following our victory at home last week we ventured to Kareela to play them on their home turf.
The team remain unchanged following their success, so the players had some confidence going into this match. The course had been severely impacted by the wet weather so there were some minor changes to tees and as we have found elsewhere there was not much run on the course.
The 3’s of Warren Hogan and Joe Bakalich led the team off, and fought hard all day but just fell short going down 2/1. Our intrepid 2’s of Mark Green and Duncan James again proved their trust in each other’s game winning 4/3. The last pairing of Geoff Warleigh and Brian O’Toole were up against a couple of cunning players from Kareela just falling short losing 2 down but I am reliably informed if could have gone our way over the last few holes.
Next week we are at home against our regular rivals Bondi.

The Coast came away victorious in our Round 3 tie against Kareela. Our 2’s and 3’s won comprehensively with Adam Brady and matt Boston winning 6&5 and Mark Millican and Glenn Hetherington finishing on the 12th hole with a 7&6 victory.
Our number 1’s, comprising of Tony de Kievet and Anthony Lloyd came away with a loss against a very determined Kareela Team. The Kareela team played some outstanding golf to upset our number 1 team with the Tony’s going down 5&3.
On to Kareela next for hopefully an away win.

Sunday 07/08/2022 was a typical day at the Coast, a light breeze out of the south and plenty of sunshine. Today was to be the 3rd round of the qualifying for this year’s Gibson Trophy and we were up against Kareela from the Shire.
The team wanted to show they had what it takes to be a competitive group following last weeks close games against Woolooware. The only change to the team was the return of Duncan James to partner with Mark Green.
The front nine was a close game in the 3’s but the 1 & 2’s were taking it to Kareela, the back nine was a different story with our team showing no mercy on the visitors.
I would like to thank Glenn F Grainger who came out and provided excellent advice to Duncan James, to David Quigg for again coming out to act as spotter at various locations around the course.
I would also like to thank the Rep committee for coming out to support us and for organising our uniforms, Kareela team members were impressed with how our team looked. The team would also like to thank the sponsors who help provide our clothing
Next week we play away at Kareela as we strive to make the playoffs.

We were due to play Woolooware away last week, but a rained out game awarded us a draw, so were were chomping at the bit to get started defending the Warren Trophy we won in 2019.
All of our team got off to a positive start winning the first hole. Fortunately for us and unfortunately for our opposition, we managed to stay ahead with no teams being in deficit at any stage during their games.
Well done crew on an impressive start to our campaign.

After being rained out in round 1 The Coast Gibbo’s were really excited to get our season underway against Woolooware. There were some changes due to player unavailability compounded by a late withdrawal. The team turned up on a sunny day to do battle looking resplendent in their recently supplied uniforms.
All teams matched the oppositions with the lead changing hands in all games, the end result was a draw with the team of Geoff Warleigh and Brian O’Toole winning 2/1, Mark Green and super sub Glenn F Grainger going down on the last 1 down and “Captain” Warren Hogan and “Smokin” Joe Bakalich ending up all square.
We would like to thank Scott Thornton who went around with Geoff and Brian, Michael White who caddied for Warren and Paddy Kelly who caddied for Glenn F Grainger. We would also like to thank David Quigg for playing the role of spotter all day.
This week we take on Kareela and again the team is eager to prove themselves.

The 2022 edition of the Warren and Gibson Trophy was due to kick off on Sunday 24th July with a trip to Woolooware Golf Club. Unfortunately, due to the recent weather, the Golf Course was unplayable, and both teams had to settle for a half.
