Ladies Bronze 1 Pennants – Round 4

Round 4 vs Woolooware @ The Coast

This week the girls had their home game against Woolooware.  In true Coast style, the weather didn’t disappoint with our home advantage and a strong ‘sea breeze’ hoping to prove too difficult for our competitors.

Leading the way this week was Judy (Presidento) Barrett.  Judy’s never one to go down without a fight, battling it out for the full 18 but unfortunately going down at the last 1 down.

Position 2 once again was Cathy (Field Captain/queen/guru) Balafoutis.  Completely oblivious to the strong winds and really not happy with last weeks loss, Cathy went out all guns blazing.  Her opponent was on fire with her putting but this just fired Cathy up even more.  With a lovely birdie on the 15th, choosing the wrong day for a pro pin win but most importantly bringing home the win for the Coast 4&3.  I feel a pro pin coming on for our Cathy B very soon!

Karen Hand stepped in at number 3 this week and played a strong match against a fiery Irish competitor determined to make her home country proud for St Patrick’s day.  She had the luck of the Irish on her side and struck a lucky bounce on the 17th from goodness knows where to land on the green.  Too much Irish luck for this match giving Woolooware the win 2&1.

Cathy McDonald was at position 4 again this week.  Bringing her Garysitting duties to the course this time with some extra support from the man himself.  From the get-go, it was clear she was in for a tough match, but even the oppositions word of her home putting green wasn’t enough ‘talk’ to deter Cathy McD.  The added support from Gary clearly paying off with the win going to The Coast 3&2.

In position 5 again was Shona (the machine) Choy.  Just another day at The Coast in the ‘sea breeze’ for our Shona this week.  Steak Sandwich in the waiting, Shona didn’t want to take too long out on the course this week, bringing the home win 3&1.

The girls are currently tied with Beverley Park at the top of the table with 3 matches to play.  With their next match not until 28 March, they get a bit of well-deserved rest before the tail end commences.

Next match won’t be an easy one against Cronulla at Hurstville.

A big thank you to our helpers with spotting and all the other bits and bobs…. Deb McDermott, Tish Curtis, Margaret Grundy, Julie and David Quigg.   And also not forgetting the yummy home baked Greek goodies from Cathy B!

Great result and well played Coasties!

Round 3 vs Camden Lakeside @ Lakeside

For round 3 the girls ventured off with an early start in the dark to Lakeside where they knew a tough match awaited against the home team.  Thankfully the weather held out, despite the forecast, and all matches were played in what ended up being almost perfect golf weather.

In position one this week was Judy (Presidento) Barrett.  Despite her consistent game, the greens played a significant advantage to the home side.  Doing her best to dig deep, unfortunately the home team came up with the goods.  Lakeside winning 8&7.

Position 2, Cathy (Field Captain/queen/guru) Balafoutis did well to leave so early this morning after her big day playing in the mixed pennants the day before.  No excuses for our Cathy though as she did her utmost to get the job done.  Sadly, the undulating greens were favouring the home side with Cathy B’s game ending in a 6&5 loss.

Our number 3, Lorna Foley, ever the fighter, was missing the trees this week but again had to put up with the home advantage on the tricky greens.  Our 3rd loss for the day – 6&5.

Cathy McDonald was at position 4 this week.  Cathy was determined to stay away as long as possible from those Garysitting duties taking her game all the way to the 18th.  Being one down after the 17th, she fought hard on the 18th to bring in a draw, unfortunately ending with a final result with the home team winning 1 up.

In position 5 again was Shona (the machine) Choy.  Always in the lead throughout the match, Shona managed to hold off a comeback to bring home the win for The Coast 2&1.

They say things usually happen in 3’s but, in this case it was 4 – a final result going the home teams way with Lakeside winning 4-1.

On Monday the tables are turned with the girls having their home game against Woolooware.

GO THE COAST!

Round 2 vs Hurstville @ Beverley Park

Our second match last Friday saw the girls off to Beverley Park to (shop… and) play golf against Hurstville.

A very hot day for the team which saw them utilizing the trees on the course a little more often than necessary for a bit of shade……

In position one again this week was Cathy (Field Captain/queen/guru) Balafoutis.  Cathy played a solid game, holding off a comeback from her opponent, winning 3&2.

Position 2, Lorna Foley.  Lorna’s first game for the B1 team, she was down 3 but managed to pull it back to have a 2 shot lead after the 9th.  Ever the fighter is our Lorna, maintaining her lead, trimming trees but bringing home the win – 2&1.

Our number 3, Cathy McDonald wanting as much relief from her Garysitting duties as possible, took her match all the way.  She got her monies worth, perhaps in more ways than she would like…… never leading the entire match, also trimming trees, but still managing to come in with a win on the 18th  – 1 up.

Marisa Duggan played in position 4 this week.  Marisa was up 4 but with no shade from tree trimming it made for a tough game in the heat of the fairway on the back 9.  Marisa dug deep in the heat but couldn’t quite close it out going down at the 18th.

In position 5 was Shona Choy the machine, having to give a lot of shots to her opponent this week.  Not much phases our Shona, coming in to win her match 2&1.

A 4/1 winning Round 2 for the girls.  A great result!

Next Monday, the girls are at Lakeside with what will be a tough match against the home team.  Best of luck girls!!

Round 1 vs Kareela @ Cronulla

The Ladies Bronze 1 Pennant team is made up of players whose handicaps are from GA 18.0 to 31.0.

The season runs over 7 weeks, commencing on 21 February with the last game being held on 11 April.

Our first match last Friday saw the girls venture to Cronulla to play against Kareela.

The team arrived at Cronulla with the sun shining, only for the weather to turn towards the end of the rounds, getting worse thereafter.

In position one was Cathy Balafoutis (Field Captain/queen/guru).  Cathy came out with all guns blazing and managed to hold onto her game winning 2&1.

Position 2, saw one of our newer members, Karen Hand, representing The Coast against a very strong opponent.  She fought well to stay in the game but unfortunately went down 4&3.

Cathy McDonald had some relief from Garysitting duties playing in position 3 for this week.  She meant business this week and was able to close out her match 2&1 – just before the heavens opened.

A newby to the team is Marisa Duggan who played in position 4.  With fighting grit, Marisa was determined to get her monies worth taking her match all the way.  Unfortunately, she couldn’t quite close it out going down at the 18th.

Shona Choy was our number 5 this week.  Being the demon she is, Shona saw the rain approaching and decided it was best to close her match out nice and early, taking a 6&5 win, preferring to opt for the shelter of the clubhouse.

So the girls wrapped up a week one win 3/2 – a great start to the season.

This Friday, we wish the girls the best of luck as they head to Beverley Park to play against Hurstville.
